I'ts a mitzvah to learn
© 2009 Hazel Berger

“It shall be when you eat the bread of the Land, you shall set aside a portion for Hashem. At the first of your kneading you shall set aside a loaf as a portion...”

Numbers 15:19-20

The mitzvah to "take challah" requires making a large batch of dough. This mitzvot has been entrusted to women to fulfill.

Using a 5 pound bag of flour saves time because the flour is pre-measured. This mitzvah has many rules, which have been simplified here. View the entire scoop on Aish. After the dough rises separate a one ounce piece and say the following blessing:

Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kideshanu be-mitzvosav ve-tzivanu lehafrish challah min ha-isah.

You are blessed, Lord our God, Sovereign of the world, Who made us holy with His commandments and commanded us to separate challah from the dough.

Place the separated dough in foil and broil until it is burnt. Wrap in another piece of aluminum foil and throw away.

The ingredients and recipe above are modified from Rebbetzin Parnes' challah class. (A Rebbetzin is a rabbi's wife.) Making challah is easier than you think and really an enjoyable family project. If children help, there is less work to do. My children like to help, so they can add sesame or poppy seeds to their liking. My daughter loves to add 1/3 cup chocolate chips.
